        General note

The bird seems to be a lithograph, hand-coloured. Likely copied from a plate by Frederick Nodder made in 1800 and published in the Naturalist's Miscellany, vol. 11, plate 433. The plant (not from Nodder's image) is painted, possible in gouache with pen and ink. Shaw refers to earlier images by Miller (Cimelia Physica, tab II. A), who in turn refers to an image in George Edwards'. Butterfly may be a monarch, the plant is a Chinese magnolia, painted on the flowers.
